You’re running Facebook and Instagram ads. Money is going out every day. The dashboard shows impressions and clicks. But real leads? Barely any. It’s frustrating, and it can make you think “ads just don’t work for my business.”

Usually, they can work. They’re just set up in a way that makes success unlikely. Here are seven mistakes we see again and again with local businesses in Toronto, Newmarket and the GTA.

Check these before raising the budget

Spending more on a broken campaign only gets you more of the same results. Fix the setup first.

1. The Wrong Campaign Objective

If you choose traffic or engagement, Meta will find people who click or like, not people who become customers. For leads, choose an objective that matches the action you want: leads, messages, calls or conversions.

2. No Tracking

Without the Meta Pixel and conversion events, Meta can’t learn who your real customers are, and you can’t see which ads work. This is one of the most common reasons campaigns stall.

3. An Audience That’s Too Broad or Too Narrow

Targeting the whole province for a local service wastes money. Stacking too many interests can make the audience too small to optimise. Start with your real service area and let the campaign learn.

4. Ads That Look Like Ads (in a Bad Way)

Stock photos, long text on images and generic slogans get scrolled past. Real people, real work and a clear message in the first seconds perform better, especially in video.

5. A Weak or Unclear Offer

“Contact us for more info” isn’t an offer. Tell people exactly what they get by reaching out: a free consultation, a quote within 24 hours, a booking slot this week. Be specific and honest.

6. Sending People to the Wrong Place

Sending ad traffic to your homepage and hoping they find the contact form rarely works. Use a page or form focused on that one offer, with a clear call to action and nothing distracting.

7. Slow Follow-Up

Leads go cold fast. If someone fills out a form and hears back in two days, they’ve probably contacted a competitor. Reply within hours, ideally minutes, and have a simple follow-up routine.

The fastest win

For many local businesses, simply replying faster to ad leads improves results more than any change to targeting or creative.

How to Fix It Step by Step

  1. Check the objective and tracking first.
  2. Tighten your area and simplify your audience.
  3. Refresh the creative with real photos or short vertical videos.
  4. Make the offer specific and send traffic to a focused page or form.
  5. Set up a fast reply and follow-up routine.

Often because the campaign is optimised for clicks, the landing page doesn’t convert, or the audience isn’t ready to buy. Look at objective, page and offer together.

They can be, because they’re quick to fill out. Add a qualifying question or two and follow up fast, since some leads may be lower intent.

Give a properly set up campaign a few weeks and enough budget to gather data. Judge by cost per real enquiry, not by the first few days.

Usually both, with placements chosen by performance. Your audience, offer and creative matter more than the platform name.
