You spent some money boosting a post. The likes went up, maybe a few new followers, a couple of “how much?” comments. But the phone didn’t ring and nobody booked. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and the problem usually isn’t Instagram itself.

The Boost button is designed to be easy, not effective. It optimises for engagement by default, which is why you get likes instead of customers. Here’s what to do instead.

Likes are not leads

A boosted post asks Instagram to find people who like and comment. A proper campaign asks it to find people who message, call, book or buy. Same platform, very different results.

Why Boosting Usually Disappoints

  • The goal is wrong: boosts typically chase engagement or profile visits, not enquiries.
  • The audience is vague: “people like your followers” isn’t a strategy for a local business.
  • There’s no tracking: without the Meta Pixel or conversion tracking, you can’t tell what worked.
  • The post wasn’t built as an ad: what works as organic content doesn’t always work as a paid message.

What a Better Setup Looks Like

  1. Pick one clear goal: messages, calls, form leads, bookings or website purchases.
  2. Define your area: the neighbourhoods or cities you actually serve in Toronto and the GTA, not “all of Canada.”
  3. Make the ad for the platform: vertical video or strong images, a message in the first seconds, a clear next step.
  4. Send people somewhere ready: a landing page, a booking form or a well-set-up message flow.
  5. Track and adjust: install the Pixel, test a few versions and keep what brings real enquiries.

Judge ads by enquiries, not clicks

Cheap clicks can be a trap. A campaign with fewer, better enquiries is usually worth more than one with lots of traffic and no customers.

Where Instagram Ads Work Well for Local Businesses

Instagram ads tend to work best when the offer is visual and easy to understand: restaurants, beauty and wellness, home services, events, real estate and local retail. They also work well for promoting something specific, like a new menu, a seasonal service or a limited booking window.

When to Fix Other Things First

If your profile looks empty, your website is confusing, or you take two days to reply to messages, ads will magnify those problems. Fix the basics, then advertise. Our article on getting more customers without just spending more on ads explains how to find those leaks.

Occasionally, for simple awareness of a post you already know performs well. For leads or sales, a campaign set up in Ads Manager with a clear goal and tracking usually works better.

It depends on your goal, competition and area. Start with a test budget you’re comfortable with, measure the cost per real enquiry, then scale what works.

Not always. Message or lead-form campaigns can work without one. A good landing page often improves results for higher-value services.

Some campaigns bring enquiries within days. Most need a few weeks of testing and adjusting to find the best audience and creative.
